Amazon has unveiled a pair of Alexa-controlled products with an eye on security and a more convenient delivery experience for both the customer and the delivery driver.
The eCommerce giant announced the Amazon Cloud Cam, an ‘intelligent’ indoor security camera, and a smart-lock service called Amazon Key.
The Cloud Cam features a 1080p Full HD resolution video, night vision, two-way audio, a wide viewing angle, and 24 hours of clips via the Amazon Cloud Cam app – so people can keep an eye on their home wherever they are.
The feed from the camera can be viewed on Echo Show, Echo Spot, Amazon Fire TV device, Fire tablets, or through the accompanying iOS or Android app. When activity is detected, the owner receives a mobile notification and the clip is stored for review.
“Cloud Cam has all the features you need to monitor your home, including a 1080p Full HD camera, night vision, two-way audio, and free storage for clips—and with the secure AWS cloud powering Cloud Cam’s advanced computer algorithms and intelligent alerts, the service is always getting smarter,” said Charlie Tritschler, VP of Amazon Devices.
With the Cloud Cam, Amazon customers are also able to support the new Key. The Amazon Key gives Prime members access to in-home delivery – yes, that’s right, it lets the delivery driver into your home to drop off your package when you’re not around.
Customers are able to track their delivery, watch the delivery happen live and review the video after the delivery is complete. Amazon says that the technology verifies the correct driver is at the right address, at the intended time, before allowing them access into a customer’s home. The driver doesn’t receive any access codes or keys.
The service can also be used to provide friends and family with access to people’s homes. And, in the coming months, customers will be able to use the Key to provide access to professional service providers, such as pet sitters and cleaning companies.
“Amazon Key gives customers peace of mind knowing their orders have been safely delivered to their homes and are waiting for them when they walk through their doors,” said Peter Larsen, VP of delivery technology at Amazon. “Now, Prime members can select in-home delivery and conveniently see their packages being delivered right from their mobile phones.”
The Amazon Cloud Cam, which is available for pre-order in the US ahead of its 8 November release, will cost $119.99 for one. Customers can purchase a pack of two for $199.99 and a three-pack for $289.99.
Meanwhile, the Amazon Key will be made available on 8 November in 37 cities and surrounding areas across the US. Prime members can gain access to it as part of the Amazon Key In-Home Kit, which includes a Cloud Cam and one of several compatible smart locks from Yale and Kwikset, for a price starting at $249.99.
