Amazon Echo still dominates the smart speaker market, but Google Home is pegging it back

Google Home Amazon EchoAmazon’s Echo devices are continuing to dominate the smart speaker market but its lead is slowly being eaten into by Google Home and other devices.

40.7m people in the US will use an Amazon Echo at least once a month this year, representing 67 per cent of smart speaker users, according to eMarketer. Meanwhile, Google Home will have 18m users for a 29.5 per cent share of the market. All other smart speakers combined will account for 8.3 per cent.

Looking ahead to 2020, the Echo’s market share is expected to fall to 60.8 per cent, while the Home grows to 32.9 per cent and the remaining speakers make up 14 per cent.

“Google Home’s competitively priced Mini drove growth for the brand in the 2017 holiday season,” said Jaimie Chung, forecasting analyst at eMarketer. “With Amazon and Google vying for spots in both the smart home and eCommerce spaces, Google’s pricing has revitalised the artificial intelligence race to dominate the home.”

eMarketer also predicts that this year will be the first time that voice-enabled speakers will be used more than wearable devices amongst Americans.

Overall, 61.1m US individuals will use a smart speaker at least once per month in 2018, an increase of 40 per cent over last year. On the other hand, it’s expected there will be 50.1m wearable users in the US this year, up nearly 12 per cent over 2017.
