Amazon has reportedly started a secret lab that is dedicated to healthcare technology, such as electronic medical records and telemedicine.
The team, which is headquartered in Seattle, has been dubbed ‘1492’ and is focused on both hardware and software projects, CNBC reports.
The group is said to be looking at opportunities that would involve pushing and pulling data from legacy electronic medical record systems – which it would make available to doctors and their patients. In addition, Amazon hopes to build a platform for telemedicine, which could lead to virtual consultations with doctors.
On top of that, 1492 is exploring health apps for existing Amazon products, like the Echo and Dash Wand. However, it is not yet clear if Amazon is building any health-specific devices, but CNBC’s sources haven’t ruled out the potential of it happening.
Amazon is currently searching for people to join its secret operation through its jobs site. Roles include a UX design manager and a machine learning director.
