Amazon Hopes to Revive Mobile Fortunes with $50 Tablet

amazon-fire-hd-tabletAmazons Fire devices have hardly set the world ablaze, but the company is hoping that its latest tablet will rise like a phoenix from the ashes to bring consumers to the firms hardware efforts.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the online retailer is planning to release a $50 (£32) tablet with a 6-inch screen during the fourth quarter of 2015 to take advantage of holiday shoppers.

If the price point is accurate, it would make the new device one of the least-expensive tablets on the market, and half the price of the companys Fire HD 6-inch tablet, its most popular device currently.

The device will be part of a new wave of tablets Amazon is planning to release this year, with 8-inch and 10-inch models also planned, according to people familiar with the companys plans.

The tablet would be aimed at first-time buyers looking for a simple device capable of straightforward tasks like shopping on Amazon and streaming video. However, the low price would result in some compromises when it comes to quality, such as mono speakers and reduced battery life.

Amazon has reportedly also attempted to reach a $50 price point with its Kindle e-reader, but the e-ink screen technology has proved too expensive to sell at such low prices. The cheapest Kindle currently retails for $79.
