Amazon has announced that developers can now create HTML5 web apps for release in its Appstore, becoming the first major platform to offer this.
The company says this, often cheaper development option, will provide ‘better opportunities for developers to make money’ from people using its Kindle Fires or people using the Appstore on Android devices.
Like native developers, they will be able to use Amazon’s in-app purchasing API to sell digital goods like subscriptions, level upgrades and offer digital currencies.
Developers can simply submit URLs for their HTML5 web apps and mobile websites to have their content accepted into the Appstore. Traditionally, app stores have only let developers create native apps that offer a full experience to their customers, with web app devs having to create a native wrapper for each of the different platforms.
