Amazon has introduced a separate membership package for its video streaming service Prime Video.
Previously bundled in as a part of the annual $99/£79 subscription for Prime, Amazons free one-day delivery service, Video will now be available separately as a monthly subscription. This costs $8.99 a month in the US – $2 cheaper than the recently-introduced monthly plan for overall Prime – and £5.99 in the UK.
Amazon isnt really shouting about this development – its hidden among the other plans on Amazons site – but it seems to be a move against competing video streaming service Netflix, which continues to dominate the market after seeing 70 per cent growth in the UK over the course of 2015.
The launch follows a recent increase in Netflixs monthly fees in the US from $8.99 – now the cost of a Prime Video subscription – to $9.99, and coincides neatly with Netflixs Q1 2016 earnings call later today.
