Amazon reportedly wants to take on Ticketmaster in the US ticketing market

ConcertAmazon is reportedly in talks with venues across the US to sell event tickets as it seeks to disrupt the industry that Ticketmaster has a solid grip over.

According to Reuters, citing four sources, Amazon has had conversations with Ticketmaster about a potential partnership, but those talks didn’t progress due to a dispute over who would control customer data. As a result, Amazon has decided it wants to go it alone.

Ticketmaster is the exclusive seller of primary tickets at many top venues in the US, and Amazon may have trouble getting in on these strong relationships and trying to convince venues to add another ticket selling outlet. Amazon is said to be sweetening its proposition with the offer of writing sponsorship checks worth millions of dollars to the venues.

The eCommerce giant has also, allegedly, approached at least one league about selling secondary tickets like eBay’s StubHub.

Amazon has been successful in the UK with its Amazon Tickets service for concerts and West End shows, outselling Ticketmaster at some events. Although, generally, in the UK, venues have multiple ticket providers.
