AMD Unveils Sulon Q, a Standalone VR and AR Headset

Sulon Q VR HeadsetThere are plenty of VR headset on the horizon currently, and one thing they all have in common is that theyre coming from established tech brands. Sony, Google, HTC – even Oculus is owned by Facebook. The Sulon Q is an exception to that rule, however, coming from Canadian startup Sulon.

The company does have the support of chipmaker AMD, though, which unveiled the headset at its Capsaicin event at the 2016 Game Developer Conference.

There are two other things which mark the Sulon Q out as different to the competition. The first is that, like Microsofts HoloLens, it integrates Augmented Reality to effortlessly enhance the real world through augmented reality applications, and seamlessly transition from the real world to virtual worlds.

The second, and Sulons biggest USP, is that the headset is totally standalone. All computing power is contained within the headset itself, meaning that it doesnt need to be tethered to a PC or smartphone. The Q is powered by a built-in AMD FX-8800P processor and Radeon R7 graphics card, and runs on Windows 10. Thats an impressive feat, though it does mean the headset is considerably larger than the competition.

The headset is due to launch late spring, though a price hasnt yet been named. Thats remarkably soon for a just-unveiled headset thats promising so much – itll be interesting to see what happens next.
