Google has unveiled the latest version of its Android operating system (OS), and it’s the second time the company has opted for the name of a branded sugary treat for an instalment.
Android 8.0 Oreo arrives almost a year to the day after 7.0 Nougat and is the second branded name following 2013’s 4.4 KitKat.
Oreo sees the introduction of picture-in-picture, enabling people to see two apps at once. For instance, if the user is on a video call, they can continue to explore their device and stay on the line to their friend. In addition, notification dots let people see what updates there are from apps on their homescreen.
Android 8.0 promises a safer, more secure experience with Google Play Protect built-in, security status being more prominent in settings, and tighter controls on app installations. And it works to preserve battery by minimising unintentional overuse of battery from background apps.
The latest version of the OS places importance on speed and efficiency. With Oreo, Google promises a faster boot speed – claiming to be up to twice as fast on Pixel. Furthermore, once the device is powered up, users can login in to their favourite apps more quickly through Autofill. There’s also the support for Android Instant Apps, enabling users to go directly to new apps without the need for installation.
Finally, and perhaps more importantly, depending on your priorities, Google is providing a fully-redesigned set of emojis with over 60 new emoji to choose from including a t-rex and a ‘mind blown’ emoji.

Android 8.0 Oreo has entered carrier testing on the Pixel, Nexus 5X/6P, Pixel C and Nexus Player, with the latest OS edition ‘rolling out in phases soon’. It can be expected to arrive on devices from the likes Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Huawei, and more by the end of the year.
