Google Play downloads widened their lead on the iOS App Store during 2015, according to an App Annie report, from 60 per cent in 2014 to nearly 100 per cent.
Looking at revenues, though, its a very different story – total iOS app revenue was nearly double that of Android in 2015 – showing that iOS users continue to be more valuable to developers.
Androids growth was driven by emerging markets, with Brazil, India, Indonesia, Turkey and Mexico contributing to more than half of the growth in downloads. For iOS, the big growth markets were China, the US and Japan, making up nearly 90 per cent of growth.
Even in the US, though, Android downloads managed to overtake iOS for the first time, with a 55 per cent market share, up from 45 per cent in 2014.
The UK seems to be heading in the same direction, with Androids share of downloads growing from 40 per cent to 45 per cent, though iOS continues to hold the majority.
