Android Hits 1bn Activations

Android has passed 1bn activations, roughly a seventh of the worlds population.

This doesnt quite mean that one in seven of us is using an Android – the figure, which includes smartphones and tablets, doesnt measure how many devices are currently active, but rather how many have been used historically.

Its another sign of the OSs incredible acceleration. In June last year, the number stood at 400m – meaning its picked up an average 40m users each month since.

The milestone was announced by Sundar Pichai, SVP of Android and Chrome at Google, in a Google+ post – the same post that revealed the existence of Android KitKat.
