Android to Overtake iTunes by August

Market research firm research2guidance says there will be more apps on the Android Market than on the iTunes App Store by August this year.

The company says in a statement: “Googles Android Market is the fastest growing app store today. Currently it shows growth rates more than twice as high as Apples App Store. In April, Android added 28,000 new apps, whereas Apple lagged behind with only 11,000 apps.”

Research2guidance says that the success of any app store in terms of app numbers correlates negatively to the success of the average app developer.

“All analysis on the early months of an app store, including the Android Market, shows that average download numbers decrease dramatically after the first months or even weeks after the launch of the store,” is says. “The long tail gets longer and longer, while the top 5 per cent gets richer and richer.”
