Android Usage Overtakes iOS for the First Time

Phones Smartphones Android Windows PhoneAndroid usage has overtaken iOS for the first time, according to figures from Net Applications.

While Android sales and ownership passed iOS a few years ago, that larger install base has always been less active than Apples switched-on users. As spotted by 9to5Mac, Androids share of the traffic monitored by Net Applications hit 44.6 per cent in July, an increase of 0.9 percentage points on June. Meanwhile, the share of traffic on iOS fell from 45.6 per cent to 43.8 per cent.

This doesnt appear to be a blip, as Androids share has been steadily increasing since January, though its possible that future Apple launches could put iOS back in pole position.

The next nearest smartphone OS is Windows Phone, which held a 2.5 per cent share of usage in July. The platform is undeniably on the up – it started the year with just 0.6 per cent – it isnt showing any sign of catching up to the big two.
