Since Angry Birds became the app gaming worlds first bona fide smash back in 2010, Rovio has tried numerous ways to monetise its golden egg, from books to stuffed toys, and clothing lines to theme parks. The latest in this line is an animated series based on the fanchise, which will debut this weekend.
As well as airing on a variety of TV channels around the world, and through selected VOD services, Rovio Entertainment has also launched a video distribution channel across the various Angry Birds titles to show the cartoon. From 17 March, the apps will update with an added button giving users access to the videos.
How advertising will work on this video channel isnt yet clear – but its clearly a big opportunity if the cartoon takes off.
“With over 1.7bn downloads of our apps, we can reach a far wider and more engaged global audience than traditional distribution would allow,” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. “Launching the channel, and partnering up with some of the best video-on-demand providers and TV networks, is an important milestone for us on our journey towards becoming a fully fledged entertainment powerhouse.”
