Aplix Corporation, which specializes in deploying Java technology on mobile and consumer electronic devices, has acquired the assets of Zeemote in an all-cash transaction.

Zeemote, an award-winning manufacturer of wireless controller technology and products for mobile devices, will operate as a separate subsidiary of Aplix Corporation and will remain at its Chelmsford, Massachusetts base. Aplix has retained the services of a number of key Zeemote staff including Jim Adams and Rob Podoloff, who will continue with their roles as VP Business Development and CTO respectively.

Aplix Corporation embeds its JBlend (Java) platform on more than 110 million mobile devices each year. Zeemotes software will be included in the JBlend offering to enable the Zeemote JS1 Controller and other Bluetooth-enabled peripherals to be offered globally.

Earlier this year Aplix signaled its intention to extend its JBlend offering by providing embedded content through a partnership with Asian games publisher G-Mode. The combination of dynamic content, TV-out connectivity and a Zeemote Bluetooth Controller device is viewed as a compelling differentiator for handset manufacturers and operators, especially in emerging markets.

“This deal makes a lot of sense for Aplix as it looks to broaden its offering through the JBlend platform,” says Nick Lane, Chief Analyst at research firm mobileSQUARED. “Zeemotes IP for connecting mobile devices via Bluetooth would appear to offer tremendous scope and opportunity.”
