App Talk

I had the honour of chairing a panel debate at the latest Mobile Monday event last night. The theme was mobile entertainment applications, and as usual at these events, no-one came away with the answer to life, the universe and everything, but thanks to spirited contributions from Flirtomatic’s Mark Curtis, Vodafone’s Dan Appelquist, GetJar’s Patrick Mork, Andreas Constantinou from analyst Mobile Vision, and Joachim Hoffmann from Fjord, I think, and hope, the crowd of 150 or so went away a little bit the wiser.
We talked about mobile apps; how to make money out of them; how to get them seen; what sort of apps are popular; why branded apps should only be done if there’s some relevance to the brand; and the difference between apps and widgets (if any), and also debated the pros and cons of apps versus making your content available on the mobile web. And to cap a perfect evening, event sponsor GetJar paid for all the drinks afterwards.
