Apple and Samsung Join Talks to Replace the SIM Card

Apple and Samsung have reportedly joined talks with telcos to replace traditional SIM cards in their devices.
According to the FT, the GSMA is due to announce a standardised embedded electronic SIM that would make it quicker and easier for consumers to switch between network operators.
A number of the largest operators are on board, including AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, Hutchison Whampoa, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone. However, technical specifications have not yet been settled on, meaning these SIMs will not reach the market until next year at the earliest. 
“With the majority of operators on board, the plan is to finalise the technical architecture that will be used in the development of an end-to-end remote SIM solution for consumer devices, with delivery anticipated by 2016,” reads the GSMAs statement.
