Apple has made a change to its App Store Review Guidelines which will enable developers to allow people to buy in-app purchases as a gift for others.
At the moment, iOS users are able to purchase paid apps for others, but cannot purchase in-app content, such as subscriptions and one-off boosts or powerups.
The updated in-app purchase rule, first spotted by MacRumors, states that “apps may enable gifting of items that are eligible for in-app purchase to others. Such gifts may only be refunded to the original purchaser and may not be exchanged”.
The previous rule read: “Apps should not directly or indirectly enable gifting of in-app purchase content, feature, or consumable items to others”.
It’s not clear how gifting of in-app purchases will actually be added to the App Store, as Apple is yet to introduce new interfaces to complement the change. However, it’s likely that Apple will soon reach out to developers with more information.
