Apple has been granted a patent for what appears to be its long-rumoured smartwatch.
First filed back in 2011, US Patent #8,787,006 describes a “wrist-worn electronic device”, which in one of the accompanying illustrations is given the name iTime.
The patent was spotted by AppleInsider, and features a smart wristband strap which can host a removable electronic device, similar to Apples iPod Nano.
The strap itself features sensors and wireless connectivity to augment the functionality of the hosted device, and can communicate with nearby devices over a piconet, to control or receive notifications.
The patent also includes details of gesture controls for the device, which enables the user to activate certain functions using a relevant movement of their arm or wrist.
