Apple Hits the Magic 10bn

Apple has clocked up its 10 billionth app download for the App Store. The magic number was achieved when Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent in the UK downloaded Paper Glider. She walks away with a $10,000 (£6,250) iTunes Gift Card for her trouble. Nice.

Mobile Marketing had calculated that the 10 billionth app was due to be downloaded around 11.05 am UK time on Saturday morning. We are currently seeking confirmation of the time of the download from Apple, and will let you know how right (or wrong) we were when we find out.

“With more than 10bn apps downloaded in just two and a half years, a staggering 7bn in the last year alone, the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams,” says Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing. “The App Store has revolutionized how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold. While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet.”

The App Store currently offers more than 350,000 apps for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, including more than 60,000 native iPad apps.
