Apple has announced that the first beneficiary of its $1bn (£775m) Advanced Manufacturing Fund will be Corning Incorporated, which will receive $200m to support its research and development, capital equipment needs and glass processing.
Corning is long-time partner of Apple and the manufacturer of Gorilla Glass displays which feature on iPhone devices.
“This partnership started 10 years ago with the very first iPhone, and today every customer that buys an iPhone or iPad anywhere in the world touches glass that was developed in America,” said Jeff Williams, Apple COO. “We’re extremely proud of our collaboration over the years and we are investing further with Corning who has such a rich legacy of innovative manufacturing practices.”
Apple told of its plans to fund advanced manufacturing in the US last week, when CEO Tim Cook spoke to CNBC in an interview.
The Fund is aimed at creating more manufacturing jobs in the US, which was a major part of President Donald Trump’s election campaign.
