Apple Pay makes its debut in the UK today, enabling iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users – plus Apple Watch owners – to pay for goods up to the value of £20, rising to £30 in September with a wave of their phone or their Watch.

Thats in most participating retailers at least. In retailers whose debit/credit card terminals have been upgraded – Boots, Marks & Spencer, Jack & Jones, Burger King and Bills Restaurants to name a few – there is no upper payment limit.

In theory Apple Watch should work in any UK retail outlet – there are just over 400,000 – that currently accepts contactless payments. Credit card providers Visa, Mastercard and American Express are on board, as are a number of major banks and building societies, including Santander, HSBC, NatWest, Nationwide and First Direct.

Bank of Scotland, Halifax, Lloyds and TSB are due to join soon, but Barclays is still on the sidelines. It recently launched its own bPay suite of contactless devices which it hopes will tick the contactless payment box for its customers.
