Apple Shutters $200m Acquisition Topsy

Apple-Logo-StoreApple has closed down Topsy, the social media analytics service it acquired for over $200m in December 2013.

The closure was announced on Topsys official Twitter account, appropriately enough, in a tweet – its first in two years – which read, simply, “Weve searched our last tweet”.

Ex-Topsy employee Barry Dauber added “Proud of what we all built @topsy but sad to see it go, was a great ride. Thanks for keeping the lights on an extra two years”.

Topsys platform enabled users to search Twitter, backdated to 2006, in order to monitor organic trends, social influencers and marketing campaigns. Its never been clear exactly why Apple bought the firm, and that now looks unlikely to ever change.

Strangely, the companys homepage now forwards to a support page for iOS search – perhaps a hint of how its technology has been absorbed by Apple, though there has never been any official announcement from the company.
