Apple Takes Second Place in Wearables Market with 3.6m Watch Shipments

apple watch slideshowApple shipped a total of 3.6m Apple Watches globally during Q2 2015, according to an IDC report, making it the second largest wearables manufacturer.

With a 19.9 per cent market share during the quarter, Apple still has a little way to go before overtaking Fitbit, which held a 24.3 per cent share with 4.4m units shipped.

Its worth remembering, however, that Fitbits focus is exclusively on activity trackers, and there is a huge difference between the two products and the price points they are sold at.

“Although Fitbit outshipped Apple, its worth noting that Fitbit only sells basic wearables – a category that is expected to lose share over the next few years, leaving Apple poised to become the next market leader for all wearables,” said IDC senior research analyst Jitesh Ubrani. “About two of every three smart wearables shipped this quarter was an Apple Watch. Apple has clearly garnered an impressive lead in this space and its dominance is expected to continue.”

Overall, its entry into the space has boosted overall wearable sales dramatically – up 223.2 per cent year-on-year, to a total 18.1m units – and stolen huge market share from competitors. Most notably, Samsungs share slipped from 14.3 per cent to 3.3 per cent.
