Apple is reportedly trialling an MVNO service in the US, and holding talks with European telcos, ahead of a potential step into the operator space.
According to Business Insider, Apple will auction capacity from telcos so that devices can switch between networks to get the best service.
The service remains a trial, however, with no firm guarantee of a full launch – and even if it does, it could be as long as five years before it rolls out to customers on either side of the Atlantic.
The benefits for Apple seem obvious – making the company the sole provider of mobile services for iPhone users – but, for the worlds largest company, it remains to be seen whether moving into this space would even move the needle.
