Apple will release AR glasses by 2020 – report

Apple ARKit 2 SwiftShotApple is reportedly on track to launch a pair of augmented reality (AR) glasses between the fourth quarter of this year and the second quarter of 2020, according to the latest predictions from reliable TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

The AR glasses will be heavily reliant on the iPhone and effectively act as just a display with all computing, rendering, internet connectivity and location services coming from the smartphone, states Kuo’s report, which was obtained by 9to5Mac. As such, it’s very likely that the headset will operate in a similar way to the Apple Watch.

The details about the headset are minimal but we can infer that the headset will not have to have an iPhone slotted directly into it and could share similarities with Magic Leap’s debut headset, which finally became available in certain locations in August 2018. At the same time, we can imagine that Apple’s take on AR headsets would consumer-focused, like Snap’s Spectacles, rather than targeting developers.
