US restaurant chain Applebees is launching its new menu with a event in New Yorks Times Square that will be broadcast using Twitters new streaming application Periscope and offers fans a chance to have their tweets displayed on the Squares iconic billboards.
The Taste The Change Fest will be taking place on 13 May, and will consist of a street party with musical performances that offers guests a chance to try items from the chains new menu.
The brand is making use of Periscope to dramatically increase the reach of the event, with the hope of reaching millions, rather than the thousands who would normally be able to enjoy a live event.
Fans following on social media will be able to compete for a trip for two by tweeting images of themselves eating one of the new menu items with the appropriate hashtags, and non-winning entries will be displayed on a digital billboard in Times Square as an additional way of driving entries.
“An over-the-top sampling party at the Crossroads of the World is the perfect way to introduce and celebrate our new menu,” said Darin Dugan, senior vice president of culinary and marketing at Applebees. “Were proud of our new food and were inviting the world to give it a try.”
