Apples App Store Hits 40bn Downloads

Apples App Store has officially broken the 40bn download mark – and nearly half of those came during 2012 alone.

Apple has announced a record-breaking December, which saw 2bn iOS apps downloads during the month.

“It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of internet software and services. “Developers have made over $7bn [£4.4bn] on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world.”

As examples of developer success stories on the store, Apple pointed to Imangi Studios, which saw 75m downloads of its game Temple Run during 2012, and Backflip Studios and Supercell, two studios which between them earned a combined $100m through their freemium apps DragonVale and Clash of Clans.
