Awards Preview – Most Effective Publisher Offering

Times appIn the second of our daily previews of our Awards finalists, we look at the contenders in the Most Effective Publisher Offering category.

The Times, Sunday Times and SapientNitro – The Times & Sunday Times app for iOS app
In the summer of 2015, Times Newspapers and SapientNitro undertook a major overhaul of the Times and Sunday Times iOS apps. Readers wanted The Times and Sunday Times to make sense of the torrent of breaking news that bombards us all. That meant giving them insightful and reliable reporting, up-to-date analysis and provocative comment on their own terms. The new design updates the daily digital edition at fixed times – 9am, noon and 5pm on weekdays, and at noon and 6pm at weekends.

Saving and sharing articles is easier than ever. Readers can save articles in the ‘My Articles’ section of the app to read offline whenever and wherever they like. And even though the Times and Sunday Times leverages a paywall readers can share their favourite articles with friends and family. And for the first time ever The Times & Sunday Times and all their great magazines and supplements are together in one place.

The new app looks great, is easy to navigate and has been well received by Times readers.

Politico and Urban Airship – Politico’s EU Referendum Tracker
In the run-up to the EU Referendum, Politico created the EU Referendum Tracker, which delivered content and notifications to iPhones via the used an Apple Wallet pass. The front of the pass featured graphics displaying polling results leading up to the vote on 23 June. After the vote had taken place, the pass switched to display live results as they came in from 382 voting districts. The back of the pass provided summaries and links to Politico’s latest coverage.

Politico’s European newsroom, working with Urban Airship, sent real-time content and notification alerts, informing pass-holders of key breaking news as it happened, and driving them to the pass which contained continuously updated story links.

In a single week between launch and the referendum vote, Politico surpassed its goal of gaining 10,000 pass-holders, representing 104 countries. The Tracker wallet pass was also successful in helping Politico acquire new readers, as nearly three quarters of registered pass users were new to the organization’s database.
