Barclays and Barclaycard have become the latest financial service providers to open up access to Apple Pay for their customers using an iPhone, Apple Watch or iPad at over 400,000 contactless locations in the UK, across the London transport network, and within participating retailers’ apps.
Barclaycard introduced the first contactless credit cards in the UK in 2007 and Barclays was the first bank to roll-out contactless debit cards to its customers. Contactless payments have seen huge growth since then. Spending rose more than three-fold in 2015, with 140m contactless transactions made in December alone.
Barclays and Barclaycard join more than a dozen other banks already supporting Apple Pay in the UK, including First Direct, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Santander and Tesco Bank.
