Over the past two weeks, the BBC has seen 12m requests for Olympic Games video coverage come from mobile devices. Thats nearly a quarter of the number of viewers who watched the TV coverage.
“This has really been the multi-platform Games, where audiences have consumed our content across PC, mobile, tablet and connected TV at different times of the day,” says Cait ORiordan, BBCs head of product, sport and London 2012, in the blog post announcing the figures.
The broadcaster received 9.2m visits to its mobile site and app from smartphones over the period – and 2.3m from Tablets.
The BBC also looked at when mobile devices were used to access this content, and found a familiar pattern. After a steady increase in usage throughout the day, mobile takes over from desktop at around 6pm, as users keep up with the Games on their way home from work. Tablet usage remains quiet throughout most of the day, but peaks later in the evening, presumably as users get home and engage in some second-screen behaviour.
