The BBC has released iOS and mobile web apps as part of the launch of iPlayer Radio, an online hub for its 57 radio stations.

The app, navigated using a dial interface, enables users to stream radio shows, whether live or after the event. It also features an alarm clock function, programme alerts to remind the user when specific shows are on, and the ability to favourite currently-playing tracks, which they can then share via email and Twitter.

“We designed and built native applications for both Android and iOS, intending to release them both at the same time,” said Andrew Scott, head of radio, music and audience-facing services at BBC Future Media. “Today weve released the iOS version, Android will come soon. Until the Android app is released, Android users can continue to use iPlayer Radio on the mobile web. As part of this project weve also made live streams available for iOS devices for all stations. We are also keen to make the on-demand content available for the World Service, Nations and English Local radio stations and have a project in planning to do the necessary infrastructure work.”

The BBC saw an 88 per cent year-on-year increase in visits to its mobile-optimised sites in September, it revealed alongside the launch. During Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend event, 34 per cent of browsers visiting the site came via mobile and tablet, and at the peak of the Radio 3 Proms, 20 per cent of users accessed the site on a tablet.
