With students in the UK beginning preparations for their GCSE and Scottish National/Higher exams, BBC Learning has launched a free app that aims to deliver its Bitesize revision system directly to smartphones.

BBC Bitesize, the corporations curriculum-linked online education resource, is already used by nine out of 10 Key Stage 4 pupils who make use of the internet for learning during the summer term, and the new app hopes to ensure that the BBCs commitment to supporting education keeps pace with the changing ways that young people interact with technology.

A recent Childwise Monitor Report found that 94 per cent of 15-16 year olds have their own mobile phone, with the average teen spending four hours a day accessing the internet via it, and 61 per cent saying that their phone is the first thing they check in the morning and the last thing they check at night.

In addition, BBC research found that over 60 per cent of Key Stage 4 Bitesize users said they used a smartphone to access the resources at home during summer term last year. Through the app, pupils will be able to access the same revision flashcards which provide a mix of text, audio, video, infographics, quotes and quizzes, all in a mobile native format.

“This new app will deliver personalised Bitesize revision cards to teenagers on their smartphones, supporting their studies outside the classroom – at home or on the go,” said Sinead Rocks, head of BBC Learning. “Alongside the recent launch of BBC Live Lessons for schools and major educational campaigns like the BBC micro:bit, this is a further demostration of the BBCs continued commitment to education.”
