BlackBerry Cutting Employee Count by 40 Per Cent

When BlackBerry announced back in May that its BBM messaging service would be coming to Android and iOS “this summer”, it seemed to suggest a potential new path for the struggling company.

The launch is finally here, with this Saturday, 21 September, confirmed as the release date for Android, with an iOS version following the next day.

Distracting from this announcement, though, was yet more bad news for BlackBerry, which will be cutting up to 40 per cent of its employees by the end of the year, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Its all part of a streamlining process to cut costs, and possibly to make the company more attractive to potential buyers – all standard business procedure – but to those of us on the sidelines, its just another in a long line of bad omens for the Canadian manufacturer which helped kickstart the smartphone revolution.
