BlackBerry Launches BBM Channels

BlackBerry BBM ChannelsBlackBerry has launched BBM Channels, the social engagement element of its flagship messaging app.

The feature works similarly to Pages on Facebook, enabling users to join Channels that reflect their interests. After joining, followers will receive notifications whenever something new is posted.

Channels can be set up by any user, but brands and celebrities will be verified using a Twitter-style blue tick.

BlackBerry last week revealed that it had acquired social media platform ScrOOn, to help brands manage their presence on Channels.

The feature is currently only available on BlackBerry devices but, given that ads are set to be introduced to Channels in the near future, it seems likely that its part of the monetisation strategy behind its Android and iOS apps.
