Guinness World Records has released a dedicated gaming app that allows gamers to attempt and set official world records on their phone. 

The app, called Gamers Edition Arcade, is available on the iOS platform and on Android, and was created by interactive development agency Plow Digital. It costs 59p. 

The app offers five official record challenges that are inspired by classic videogames, and the user who gets the best score for each game is guaranteed an entry in next years book – the Guinness World Records 2012 Gamers Edition.

Users can share their scores via Facebook, Apples Game Center, or via Open Feint, with global leaderboards hosted at www.guinnessworldrecords.com. 

Gaz Deaves, gaming editor at Guinness World Records, says: “This is our first-ever gaming app and we wanted to capture that retro spirit of classic gaming. Im sure that our gamer fans will recognise the games and feel the heritage, and look forward to smashing some new Guinness World Records.”
