The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) has introduced a 4G mobile network, using High Speed Packet Access Plus (HSPA+) technology, and mobile broadband services to the country. BTC says this is part of a process designed to give citizens of The Bahamas, who previously only had access to 2G mobile services, all the opportunities and advantages of a connected society.
Hubert A. Ingraham, Prime Minister of The Bahamas, who turned on the 4G network at a ceremony, says: “In the most basic terms, complementing our eGovernment initiative, this new technology means that BTC is offering a modern platform where persons are able to complete a banking transaction and renew their drivers license from their mobile phone device, whilst taking care of other matters. I believe that BTCs introduction of 4G demonstrates the companys commitment to the Bahamian public.”
The majority shareholding in BTC was purchase last year by Cable & Wireless Communications, from The Bahamian government.
