Channel 4 has launched a 4oD application for Android, a full 17 months after the app launched on iOS.
The app is only available on devices running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or higher. While Channel 4 acknowledges that an estimated 60 per cent of Android users are still running versions 2.1–3.2, it points to its mobile site as an alternative for these users.
“We’re pleased to be able to extend our successful video-on-demand service to this range of modern Android devices with a dedicated 4oD app,” said Sarah Milton, Channel 4s head of VOD (Video On Demand). “Users will now be able to catch up on their favourite Channel 4 shows and enjoy many more classics from the Channel 4 archive via their smart phones and tablets. This development continues our ongoing strategy of widening access to 4oD, with particular emphasis on supporting the increasing numbers of users who want to watch our programmes on portable devices.”
