Data Makes Up 42 Per Cent of US Mobile Service Revenues

The US mobile data market grew 19 per cent year over year in Q2, 2012, to reach a total $19.3bn (£12.3bn), according to a report from analyst Chetan Sharma – an increase of 5 per cent over last quarter. Data now makes up 42 per cent of the US mobile industry service revenues.

Whereas last quarter US operators saw a decline in postpaid subscriptions, that trend appears to have been reversed with the addition of almost 400,000 postpaid subscriptions. Thats down largely to the strong performance of Verizon Wireless, however, and Sprint and T-Mobile continued to see postpaid declines. The number of US prepaid subscriptions, meanwhile, passed 100m for the first time.

Smartphone sales crossed the 70 per cent mark of total devices sold, pushing penetration past the 50 per cent mark for the first time in the US market.
