David Cameron Announces 5G and Internet of Things Plans

cebit-2-David Cameron has announced a host of government plans to develop the UKs telecoms space at the CeBIT trade fair in Hanover.

King’s College London and the University of Surrey are working together with Germanys University of Dresden to develop 5G technology, and Cameron also announced funding aimed specifically at Internet of Things development.

“We are on the brink of a new industrial revolution and I want us – the UK and Germany – to lead it,” said Cameron. “I see the Internet of Things as a huge transformative development, a way of boosting productivity, of keeping us healthier, making transport more efficient, reducing energy needs, tackling climate change.”

The UK government will be making £45 million funding available for research in the area, as well a £1m European Internet of Things grant for companies working in the space.
