Movie tie-in app Despicable Me: Minion Rush dethroned Candy Crush Saga as the most downloaded free app on iOS during June, according to data from Distimos AppIQ service – despite only being released in the second week of the month.
It was one of two releases from Gameloft in the top five – along with Uno & Friends, in fifth place – and one of four games. Vine, the lone non-game app, reached a peak of over 300,000 downloads on 15 June – five days before the unveiling of Instagram video.
On the paid apps front, WhatsApp continued its dominance of the top spot, while the remaining four apps were all games. The fifth most downloaded app, SpongeBob Moves In, is notable for actually increasing its price during the period, from $1.99 to $3.99 – something which clearly didnt do too much to damage its popularity.
Android
Distimo also looked at the top downloads on Google Play and, for the first time, the Amazon App Store.
The big difference is that Google Plays top apps were more likely to be utility or communication apps. Facebook and WhatsApp continued to rule the top of the free chart, followed by the only game in the chart, Candy Crush Saga, rising from fifth place.
It was a similar story in the paid chart, with SwiftKey Keyboard holding the top spot, followed by the pro version of Android backup tool Titanium. The third spot was again filled by the only game on the list, Minecraft.
By contrast, all of the top apps on the Amazon App Store, both paid and free, were games. Crazy Dentist topped the free chart, with child-friendly spinoff Little Dentist also taking fourth place. Minecraft made yet another appearance at the top of the paid chart, followed by another dentistry game, Dentist Office Kids – clearly, Kindle owners have a major interest in oral hygiene.
