Developers Favouring Android Over iOS

67 per cent of developers are currently using Android, compared to 59 per cent who are using iOS, according to Developer Economics 2011, a mobile developer research report released today by BlueVia, Telefonica’s global developer platform, in partnership with the analyst, Vision Mobile. The report also reveals that 55 per cent of developers are building apps written in HTML or JavaScript.

The second annual report explores both what drives developer mindshare and how brands are fast-forwarding into the world of mobile. It highlights which mobile platforms gained and lost developer mindshare; which are the most popular revenue models; which go-to-market channels are the fastest and quicker to pay; and how will apps in smartphones versus tablets versus TVs play a role in the future.

The report has more than doubled the number of respondents against 2010’s research, now representing 75 countries, while the number of software platforms covered has jumped from eight in 2010, to 12 in 2011. Moreover, for the first time Developer Economics carries added insight into digital strategies from over 50 leading international and regional brands, through one-to-ne interviews with digital agencies, media, retail and internet companies.

“We’re delighted to be supporting the project once again in 2011, which allows the research to be made freely available for download,” says James Parton, head of developer marketing at BlueVia. “Telefonica remains steadfastly committed to understanding the needs of developers to help shape our product roadmap, and 2010’s Developer Economics findings were a key input into the thinking that produced BlueVia.”
