Devicescape Software has released details outlining its first year of activity after launching its auto wi-fi service, Devicescape. The service had an initial alpha release in December of 2006 and was officially launched at the DEMO 2007 tech conference in Palm Dessert, California, in January 2007.
Devicescape simplifies access to wi-fi networks by enabling consumers to enter login details for all the private and public networks they access, once only, via a PC Internet site. These details are stored on a secure server. When the user wishes to access one of the networks, they simply launch the Devicescape application, which sniffs out any of the users registered networks and makes the connection, with no need for any login at the point of connection.
The solution was designed initially for wi-fi-enabled devices with no, or limited, data entry capabilities, such as digital cameras and games consoles. Devicescape also makes it possible for a wi-fi-enabled phone which doesnt have a web browser built in, to log on to a wi-fi network for VoIP calls or other connected applications such as email or maps.
Devicescape notes that both the company and the technology have been recognised by industry groups and awards committees, including the Wireless Broadband Innovations Awards and the Silicon Valley Emerging Tech Awards. The company has signed deals for device distribution with the worlds largest device manufacturers, including Nokia, and has also signed several deals with wireless Internet service providers. Additionally, Devicescape has experienced exponential growth in its member base.
To date Devicescape currently supports over 100 different devices running on 10 different operating systems; over 850 public networks for access on hundreds of thousands of hotspots worldwide; and over 100 university networks added by Devicescape members. The company has members in 176 countries worldwide.
Devicescape Connect software is currently available via the Nokia Download! folder in over 60 countries worldwide and globally in the Tableteer folder. The company has also created and launched an installable version of its software for the iPhone and iPod touch. In addition, Devicescape has launched a service that enables consumers to securely share access to home or other personal wi-fi networks with friends and family for expanded wi-fi coverage.
