Back in August, Disney revealed its plans to pull its content from Netflix and launch its own streaming service on the back of it gaining majority ownership of BAMtech, which powers streamed content for the NHL, MLB, PGA Tour, WWE, and Riot Games/League of Legends. It also said it would launch a ESPN-branded streaming service. And now we have a clearer idea of what to expect from the two streaming platforms.

The Disney streaming service will launch toward the backend of 2019, once Disney’s agreement with Netflix runs down. It will stream the latest Disney Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars feature films, as well as Disney producing four or five films a year exclusively for the service.

In addition, Disney plans to produce a number of original series for the service. Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed, in the company’s earnings call for this quarter, that a Star Wars live action series is already in development along with a series based on the Monsters franchise, a High School Musical series, and a Marvel television series. These will be joined by new short films and features from across Disney’s various entertainment platforms, and ‘thousands of hours’ of archived film and TV content.

“In the coming months well share specifics about content development, launch plans and investment levels,” said Iger.

Iger also provided some insight into its plans for the company’s ESPN service in the call.

ESPN+ will be accessible through a revamped ESPN app from spring 2018. The updated app will enable users to access sports scores, highlights, stream its sports channels, and subscribe to ESPN+ for additional sports coverage, including ‘thousands of live sporting events’.

“This one app experience will be a one of a kind product, offering sports fans far more than they can get on any other app, website, or channel and immediately propelling ESPN in the new direction,” said Iger.
