Sunday 2 December was just supposed to be another day on the advent calendar, but it has delivered record numbers of shoppers to both eBay and PayPal.
PayPal has reported global mobile payment volumes that exceeded one of the traditional bumper shopping days, Cyber Monday, by more than $1m – making it the biggest mobile shopping day in its history.
Sister company eBay also enjoyed its biggest mobile shopping day – after already seeing huge increases in mobile traffic and purchases across Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday – but it hasnt yet shared any specific figures.
Asked on CNBC if mCommerce is the wave of the future, Steve Yankovich, VP of mobile at eBay, said: “We are still in early days. Mobile growth has been phenomenal. If you think about four years back, people didnt think about mobile commerce at all. And today we expect to do $10bn globally on eBay mobile [in 2012].
“And its all about the consumer. When and where do they want to shop? The smartphone is changing the game. Were in a paradigm shift in how people are shopping.”
When asked whether mobile shopping leads users to one type of product or another, Yankovitch said: “The types of products are the same that they buy online on a computer or that are popular in-store. Its just about convenience. Everything from small value items to six-figure cars being bought on eBay mobile.”
