A third of purchases on eBay in the UK come via mobile. Mobile transactions are growing at around 80 per cent year-on-year, and are expected to hit $20bn (£13bn) globally by the end of this year, up from $13bn in 2012.
The figures were revealed by Clare Gilmartin, managing director for eBay UK and Greater Europe, in an interview with The Telegraph.
“It’s not simply a replication of buying on your PC, it’s actually very different,” said Gilmartin in the interview. “People have their mobile phone with them 100 per cent of the time, so shopping opportunities have exploded and the chance to touch consumers has exploded. The phone also has a camera, which has huge potential.”
At any one time, there are around 350m listed on eBay. Together, its site and app – which has been downloaded 160m times – see 60m monthly unique users in Europe, and 19m in the UK.
