Two of the eCommerce world’s biggest players are going to war after eBay filed a lawsuit against Amazon accusing it of illegally poaching sellers from its marketplace.
The first strike from eBay came earlier this month when it sent a cease-and-desist letter to its rival, demanding that it stopped its alleged practice of recruiting sellers using eBay’s internal messaging system.
According to eBay, fat least 50 Amazon sales representatives from nations including the US, UK, France, Spain, Italy, Australia, and Singapore used its direct messaging system to contact hundreds of its biggest sellers in a bid to convince them to switch platforms.
eBay also alleges that Amazon coordinated its poaching efforts from its headquarters as many of the accounts were created from an Amazon IP address. Most of the messages sent out were also very similar.
One example presented by eBay was three accounts all created by the same person sending out 120 messages to sellers without conducting any business on the site at all. And there are even reported examples of representatives admitting they were breaking the rules.
