The European Union is looking at the idea of splitting up Google into smaller companies, as the battle between the tech giant and the European collective rages on.

According to a report in the Sunday Telegraph, which we first saw via Reuters, the EU holds ‘grave suspicions’ about how Google’s dominance is keeping down the competition. As a result, the European Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager, believes the threat of taking apart Google must remain a viable option.

Google is already facing the imposition of stricter rules on its commercial practices with smaller businesses that use its services. This comes after the internet behemoth was fined a record €2.42bn (£2.14bn at the time) for favouring its own shopping service over ones from competitors. And we can expect more cases like this levelled at Google in the future.

The European Commission is currently in the midst of drafting a regulation which will require eCommerce sites, app stores, and search engines to be more transparent in how they rank results and why they delist others.
