European mCommerce Revenues Will Top €19bn in 2017, says Forrester

European mCommerce revenues are set to rise from €1.7bn in 2011 to €19.2bn in 2017, according to a report from analyst firm Forrester. The forecast predicts that mCommerce, which currently accounts for 1 per cent of total web sales, will grow to 6.8 per cent over the next five years.

The UK will continue to lead the pack, with mobile revenues topping €6.1bn by 2017, compared to €4.1bn in Germany, and €3.1bn in France. The population of mobile buyers in Europe will rise from 7.6m in 2011, to more than 79m in 2017, with over 45 per cent of all mobile users buying via their phone.

“Mobile commerce is a hot topic,” says Forrester analyst Martin Gill in a blog post. “While it may only represent one or two per cent of most retailers’ online revenues today, it will grow to be a notable revenue driver over the next five years. It’s time that eBusiness executives stopped talking about mobile as something to do in the future and started enabling great, multi-touchpoint shopping experiences with mobile at the heart.”

The report is based on 14,000 consumer surveys, conducted in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the UK.
