European Smartphone Penetration Hits 55 Per Cent

Smartphone penetration in the EU5 – thats the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy – has reached 55 per cent, according to comScore’s MobiLens survey, with the total user base growing 33 per cent year-on-year.

The survey is based on the three month period ending November 2012, meaning that Christmas has probably put that number significantly higher.

Samsung holds a 31 per cent share of the smartphone market in the countries surveyed. That number is significantly lower in the UK, at 25 per cent – though its worth noting that their market share has grown 166 per cent year-on-year.

Android is the leading OS in Europe, with a market share of 48 per cent across the EU5, an increase of 115 per cent. By comparison, Apple holds a 21 per cent share, RIM has eight per cent, and Windows Phone stands at five per cent.

comScore will be presenting these figures, with further insights, during its keynote session at M-Days, taking place on 5-6 February in Frankfurt.
